What’s on Your Plate?

The New USDA Food Icon

Today, the USDA unveiled ChooseMyPlate.gov, the food guide that replaces the now obsolete MyPyramid.  As you can see in the picture above, the new icon is a much more straightforward description of what foods should be included in a healthy meal as well as in what quantity.  Notice that half of the plate is made up of veggies and fruit! The new guide also includes tips such as making “at least half your grains whole grains” and choosing reduced fat dairy products.  Nutrition experts have applauded the icon’s simplicity in comparison to the Pyramid.  How does your plate stack up? Will you be visualizing this icon the next time you serve yourself?
