Valentine’s Day in the Raw…for Love or Lust?!

ImageWhat do you think about the big V Day? Should we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Or is this just another over commercialized holiday designed to keep florists, chocolatiers, and card making companies in business. Or better yet, is it an excuse for the exchange of gifts for sex?

This day of lovers and sometimes friends is shrouded in mystery. There are at least three saints named Valentine or Valentinus recognized by the Catholic Church, all martyred. That aside, there is a darker history related to the famous holiday. The pagan festival of Lupercalia, celebrated on February 15, was a fertility festival, with animal sacrifices, drunken revelry and even an old school version of a key party. Around A. D. 270, their key party was more of a paper party; all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman.

In modern times key parties are a form of swinging parties, in which male partners place their car and house keys into a common bowl or bag on arriving. At the end of the evening the female partners would randomly select keys from the bowl and leave with that key’s owner. Eventually Lupercalia was outlawed because of the Christian uprising, and replaced by Valentine’s Day, a day of romance celebrated February 14, decreed by Pope Gelasius.

This Tuesday February 14, 2012 many will break the bank buying jewelry and flowers for their beloveds. Others will celebrate in a SAD (that’s Single Awareness Day) way, dining alone and binging on self-gifted chocolates, having a few adult beverages with their other single friends. A few may even be spending this day the same way the early Romans did. Either way…what do you think?

Ok Remix fans these are my poll questions, I am interested in your feedback. Should we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Or is this just another over commercialized holiday designed to keep florists, chocolatiers, and card making companies in business. Or better yet, is it an excuse for the exchange of gifts for sex? Let me know what you think. THE GOOD, THE BETTER AND THE BEST STILL TO COME.

I think people over analyze v day. It’s a day to celebrate whatever u want however u choose. If u want to spend a bunch of money on gifts do so. If u want to to have sex with a stranger go ahead.. if u and someone special go have a romantic evening, wonderful. Those who hate Valentine day need to stop ruining it for others.

Valentine’s Day is just another day to tell someone you care about that you care about them and appreciate them. Its a day to do something together – if its on the 14th or just another day. It reminds us to share our feelings with our loved ones, whether is a boyfriend/girlfriend or just friends and family.

I see both sides; it is a great opportunity to have 1 designated day to share/show your love but also think its over commercialized.
