Have you ever heard of the term “Hangry”? It’s a combination of hungry and angry, a common phenomenon at the end of an exhausting day. Instead of rushing home and polishing off a bag of Tostito chips, STOP. What are you really in the mood for? Are you craving salty, sweet, savory or cheesy? Yes, cheese is its own category. Here are a few surefire snacks that will satisfy every palette. The only heart attack you’ll be having is the shock of how delicious these healthy snacks are.
SWEET Jesus…Where are the Skittles?
The solution: Cherry Craisins by OceanSpray
Unlike regular Craisins, these bad boys aren’t tart. They taste more like Twizzlers and go great in Vanilla Greek Yogurt.
Alternative: Kettlecorn popcorn in Popsecret minibags. Throw in a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips if you’re a choc-o-holic. This snack won’t make your tummy hurt afterward, but it’ll feel just as indulgent.
When Chocolate is the only fix: Stir up some hot cocoa and top it off with Light whipcream and a chocolate granola bar. Chewy’s granola bars aren’t filling. Try something with fiber or protein. Fiber one chocolate chip snack bars are good, so are Cliff Kids fudge brownie bars and Nature Valley Oats & Chocolate.
Cheesy? Work it, without Papa John.
Toast half a Bagel Flatbread, then pick a cheese. Pepperjack guy? Goatcheese gal? Whatever it is, spread it on and then pop it in the microwave for 12-15 seconds. Low cal pizza bagel meets quesadilla? Winner.
Alternative:Laughing Cow Light Cheese wedges.
It’s a cold cheese spread that tastes creamy and rich. It’s difficult to comprehend but somehow it’s only about 35-40 calories for all that goodness. Dig in!
SALTY? Olive you.
Hit up the olive bar at your grocery store in advance. Not a fan? Then egg it up! Spray a cereal bowl with non-stick cooking spray and pour in a 1/4 cup of egg whites or beaters. Pop in the microwave for 45 seconds, or until it forms a solid. Add a little salt and pepper and chow down. Sounds extremely weird, but it’s a protein-packed way to cure the craving.
My favorite salty pick: Pistachios. They’re the best nut to cure a “hangry” fit. Buy them with shells, and you’re more likely to stay accountable with the right serving size. They pack a lot of flavor and healthy fats, without making your stomach feel uncomfortable the way too many peanuts can.
Something COLD? Yogurt, Hummus with crackers, or a Cheese wedge with a few baby tomatoes or an apple.
Something HOT? Oatmeal
Something SAVORY? Frozen Turkey meatballs with marinara sauce. Try them with some hot sauce for an extra kick.
Comfort Food? Progresso’s Chicken and Dumpling soup with crackers.
Do you have a go-to snack? What cures your hangry pains?
