Here’s a riddle for you. What does an engineer from Harvard, a communication major from Delaware and an organic farmer from UCLA have in common? They can all vent about relationships until the cows come home.
After spending the past four years at a state school I know one thing is for certain – love is one big ole inebriated battlefield. And for better, or for worse, we have all endured. As I prepare to watch my little blue hens fly off into the real world I can’t help but look back and reminisce on the shenanigans we’ve gotten ourselves into. And what better way to combat nostalgia than with a bit of music? After some lengthy deliberation I’ve composed a short playlist sampling some songs that define just a smidgeon of the misguided interactions, hilarity, and if fortunate, love, college students from all ends of the country can hopefully relate to.
1. “Can you Tell” – Ra Ra Riot
You’ve never been so excited to get to Business Management Systems. (Disclaimer – I have no idea if such a class exists or what this class could, or would, entail) Your stomach is so knotted it feels like you’ve been eating bad burritos from Baja Fresh for the past week. You’re crushing. Hardcore. Now only if you could stop drooling enough to say hi.
2. “Call Me Maybe” – Carly Rae Jepson
It’s not really a novel concept. Here’s my number, so call me maybe. Done. Right? I’m still waiting for the stats on the success rate of this one. College students being vulnerable…something tells me this is not happening.
3. “I Kissed A Drunk Girl” – Something Corporate
Substitute girl with guy in some cases – but we’ve all been there. The name “Joe No Pants” is on your contact list to prove it.
4. “If It Kills Me” – Jason Mraz
Perhaps BMS (Business Management Systems Kid) blossomed into a friend. Or maybe you’ve known him since freshman year and watched girl upon girl trample over his heart. You’ve dated other people, but secretly you’ve been waiting for the day he sees you as the Angelina to his Brad. And guess what? He does.
5. “Single Again” – Trina
So that breakup wasn’t really mutual. That will have anyone singing Trina’s last line “Diamond Princess, yeah I’m still the baddest b**ch.”
6. “Somebody That I Used To Know” – Gotye
Seeing a significant other after a week, a month, a year, is still painful. The forty million covers of this song prove everyone agrees.
7. “Your Hand In Mine” – Explosions in the Sky
So you found love in a hopeless place (thank you Rihanna). Without words this song takes the euphoria of young love and describes how it feels when, put simply, your hand is in mine.
This playlist could easily exceed 100 songs – leave a comment and post any songs that describe your experiences navigating the realm of love and relationships. The good, the bad, and everything in between!
